Disconnected Verses is the brainchild of a few young Muslim women in Toronto with the inkling to write. Sadly, we don’t write in ink. The team consists of the following members:
Safiyyah Ally, a Political Science PhD student at the University of Toronto with the uncanny ability to vividly capture the brilliant and small moments of life. Keep an eye out for her incredibly accurate descriptions and let us know if you’ve discovered her secret.
Hajera Khaja, a Medical Biophysics Masters student at the University of Toronto who possesses a certain funky but serene pizzaz, often delving into the mysterious and philosophical nature of things. She’s a sly one, at that–careful now.
Asmaa Hussein, a Social Work Masters student at the University of Toronto, who is witty and writes with an unparalleled brilliance that may or may not knock your socks off. If not, we suppose she’ll still do.
Commonplacer, a hill-standing blogger who just recently remembered she went through 4 years of university a while back in order to tuck a degree in Creative Writing under her arm. And we say she’s put it to good use.
Fathima Cader, a recent university graduate currently pursuing her Masters in English at the University of Toronto and preparing for her MCATs. How one does both simultaneously and still manages to write immense and thought-provoking pieces, we’ll never know.
Pathopoet, a student and soon-to-be-educator who writes with a stunning loveliness. Feel free to add your own adjectives — we’re quite sure she’ll live up to them.
What you will find here ranges from the intellectual musings of some, to the mildly insane poetic rants of others. We hope that this site will delve into the creative mind of Muslims–a sphere that is often forgotten and neglected in our communities. And contributions are always welcome.
So sit back with your cup of tea/coffee/irony and enjoy the show.
Assalaamu Alaikum

Are you limited to submissions from Muslim women?

No. Would you like to join? We’ve already lined up two other people and eventually want this to be a site that showcases Muslim creative writing of all sorts. I notice you write poetry yourself? We’d certainly be happy to have you.

Oh, and I was wondering… would you be willing to post ‘guest’ submissions, at all?

Asalaamu Alaaikum,
Do you have book reviews on this blog? Because if you do there is this great new book out with beautiful poetry and essays called Between Love, Hope and Fear.

hey Assalaamu Alaykum, I write poetry and short stories, and I’ve even been read multiple times on a poetry radio show in Cairo. Can you only be a part of this if you live in Toronto?

Molly, we’ve been thinking about how best to expand this project, so thanks for your question. Would you mind sending us some of your writings? We’ll take a look and then get back to you. You can email our admin person at asmhuss at yahoo dot ca.
